The drama of moving

Over the last few months Jon and I had been dreading this move. We knew that it was going to be expensive, and long. We had been worried about moving with a two month old and wondering how it was all going to work out. Would Abby do well in the car? Would we have to stop a lot along to way? How much longer would the trip be because of those stops? We just did not know what to expect with a baby. To be honest Abigail did remarkably well with the 17 hour drive. We were so proud of her. Amazingly enough, she would cry the last 30 minutes of drive regardless if it was a four hour drive or a ten hour drive, it was like she could sense that we were close and wanted to get out of her seat.

We arrived to Stillwater late Saturday, excitedly and anxiously, we picked up the key to our new apartment, only to be disappointed when we were greeted with a disgusting place. Words and pictures can not even begin to describe how gross this place was. There was large stains on the carpet or mat, since you couldn't really call it a carpet, and our feet turn black if we walked on it barefoot. In the bathroom there was mold on the bathtub and floor boards. The tub and toilet had not been cleaned in months. In the kitchen the oven would billow out black smoke when we tried to use it. None of the blinds worked, there were dead bugs everywhere and to top it off the key we were given did not even lock the door. But to put us at ease there were three different locks on the door. It made us wonder what kind of place we were living in. Every time we left our house, we wondered if our stuff would be there when we got back.

The next day at church we met a young couple and they told us that there were several graduate student families living at a complex called the links. We had looked at the links before we moved here and were very nice but decided to go with OSU graduate family housing instead. After church, we went down to the links, they told us they had an apartment available already and we could move in that day if we wanted to, but we needed to make sure we could get out of our contract with OSU. On Monday, first thing we headed to campus. We explained that our apartment was disgusting and we couldn't live there with a baby and we needed to get out of our contract. They told us they would need to see for themselves, so a man came to look at our place. We could tell he was disgusted but told us the only way we could get out if we payed 600 dollars. Since that was not an option, we decided to make the best of it. A few minutes latter, the same man came back to give us a key that actually worked. Once again, Jon asked what we could do to get out of the place. The man said we just needed to pay 150 dollars. We took the deal. As we were packing, another man came by to look at the apartment and he kept apologizing that we had to stay here for the last few days. He told us that we did not have to pay anything. It was such a miracle.

We were able to move into our new apartment that same afternoon, and we are so glad we did.

Your apartment is so nice! Your kitchen is bigger than mine and you have more cupboards than me. Maybe I should move to Stillwater. Probably not Stillwater but I'm not opposed to Dallas at least.
